Pilgrimmage

Last Saturday I went on a pilgrimmage to Kangwondo with the Catholic Church History institute.

The priest at the parish church in Yangyang was killed by North Korean soldiers and his church was burnt. This is a monument recognizing his martyrdom, comparing him to Jesus Christ, the good shepherd.
The view of Yangyang from the church.

Our lunch. Notice the little chairs without legs.

Yangyang's mascot, a mushroom holding a smaller mushroom scepter. Presumbly he is a scion of the Mushroom Kingdom featured in Mario Brothers.

Downtown Yangyang. Notice the long line of lanterns for Buddha's birthday, which was celebrated on May 2nd.

Ho Kyun's house. He was a writer from the 17th century who is famous for writing the Korean version of "Robin Hood." He also brought books into Korea from China that including works on Catholicism though he himself was not a Catholic.
A monument with one of Ho Kyun's poems carved upon it.
A comic version of Ho Kyun's book.
A magistrate's yamen. A Catholic martyr was sentenced to death here.
The front of the Yamen.
There was a Korean festival on the same day as Buddha's birthday and so they hung up the paper rope and put the brown dirt on the floor. I think these are supposed to keep out evil spirits. They obviously don't work as I was able to walk in no problem.
